During National Outdoor Week in May, you'll be able to buy a walking starter kit from selected retailers for under £100. Top idea to promote the hills to beginners.

We have a proper show preview in the pipeline for later today -
wurk, wurk, wurk - but here's something we think is a really nice
idea.
The outdoors trade are launching what they call 'Go Outdoors
Starter Kits' at the show this weekend. The idea is that if you're
new to the hills or know someone who is, you can sort them out with
the basic gear they'll need to go walking for £100 or less.
The starter kits are going to be part of National Outdoor Week
between 3 and 11 May this year and will include a pair of walking
boots, walking socks and a daysack. You'll be able to buy them from
selected retailers - watch this space - and some stores will throw in
additional useful items as well.
All the participating retailers will have their kits on sale for
the duration of National Outdoor Week but some will make their
kit available for a longer period.
Outdoors, which has 26 stores nationwide, is offering a pair of
Trezeta Trek GTX boots, Bridgedale socks and Escape daysack plus a
Silva compass for just 80 quid from the beginning of April through to
the end of August.
There are loads of other offers through independent retailers too.
For more details and an information sheet with details of all starter
kit packages call 020 8842 1111 or visit the Go
Outdoors web site (the details don't appear to be there yet
though...)
Fantastic idea. Respect to the Outdoors Industry Association :-)
