Lakes Free Walks Decision Delayed

Update: The decision over the controversial proposal to end the Lake District Park Authority free walks programme has been postponed until later this month....

A follow-up to yesterday's news article about the proposals by the Lake District Partk Authority to scrap their programme of free walks because participants were basically predominately white and middle class.

Originally a meeting of the park authority yesterday was to make a decision on the controversial plans, but according to today's Guardian, the decision will now be taken at a special meeting later this month.

The free walks programme apparently costs £40,000 and, according to the park's spokesman, attracted fewer than 5,000 people last year. Meanwhile the Guardian quotes the UK director of the Black Environmental Network of saying she would prefer an integrated approach rather than see one programme stop and another start.

See the Guardian story.

Just received this reply to my complaint.

Thank you for your email and for taking the time to contact us.

Last December members of our Corporate and Financial Services Committee agreed a
strategy directing our work over the next three years. All Authority members
were then asked to confirm this decision on Tuesday. They were unable to do
this and have agreed to meet again on 7 February.

One element of the strategy has received a lot of media attention in the last
few days. This is our intention to stop our events and guided walks, which we
know other organisations provide. This will allow us to concentrate on reaching
new audiences, who for many reasons do not feel welcome or able to visit their
National Park.

At the moment, we only reach about 30,000 of the 14 million visitors who come to
the National Park every year. The volunteer-led guided walks attract 4,500
people and cost us £8.50 per person. There are others who provide these sorts of
events and we must avoid duplicating services others do.

Please be reassured everyone is welcome in their National Park. If you would
like more information about other organisations' events in the National Park,
please let us know.

If you would like to take your complaint further, please write to the National
Park Officer, Murley Moss, Oxenholme Road, Kendal LA9 7RL.

Best wishes

I don't understand why the walks cost £8.50 per person, unless the guides need to take groups on buses, boat trips or provide refreshments.

How can you reach a new audience by continually developing new approaches without giving things time to grow and mature...

Perhaps publicity is more of a problem (and word of mouth with solid schemes could help with this), for I was not aware of the free guided walks, and although I live in Scotland, I'm in the Lakes a lot and have never been aware of National Park walks and events.
