Lowe Alpine's Forgotten Pack

Ultra-minimalist sac weighs just 280 grammes for 16 litres of capacity.

One quick bonus from our recent visit to Lowe Alpine to see their new TFX and Hyperlite packs in the form of a quick look at their forgotten ultra-lightweight daypack.

Lowe Alpine Illusion pack
Illusion - minimalist straps save weight and bulk.

We say 'forgotten' because the Lowe Alpine Illusion has been around for a while, skulking quietly in the 'accessories' range. Originally it was designed as a rope bag intended to carry a 60-metre, 10mm rope to the crag in relative comfort, but it can also be called into service as an ultra-lightweight, minimalist summit pack or just as an ultra-lightweight daysac,

How light? Claimed weight is just 280 grammes and capacity a decent 16 litres. Best of all, the price tag is a mere £25. No, you won't get much comfort or support from it, but if you want something that's simply very light and very stowable, it's a good option.

Just tried searching for this pack, no hits, seems its actually called the Lowe alpine Houdini rather than Illusion.

Hmm, quite neat looking and a good price, but 280g for 16 litres only strikes me as ok, not great. Of course if you're prepared to pay almost twice the price you could get 20 litre capacity in a pack with more features for a mere 210 grams....

Another good option for a light, no frills daypack, is the 25L Golite Ion. Made from bombproof Dyneema, so fine for scrambling with. Enough room for a lightweight overnighter too.
