We had a quick look around the 2007 Merrell range at the recent Outdoor Preview show and thought you might like a quick sneak preview of what's new from the brand next spring.

Tougher Chameleon

The most striking change is the way the Chameleon XCR has been toughened up. While this year's version features a low-cut upper that looks vulnerable to scree abrasion, next year's model gets an all-round rand to provide a bit more protection.

The Chameleon Wrap Gore-Tex XCR is Merrel's mainstream walking shoe and will retail for £90. We walked the Annapurna Circuit in an earlier incarnation of the Chameleon, so we can tell you that they're a comfortable and capable shoe; the new reinforcement is welcome though.

The shoe features an injection-moulded arch shank as well and a heel counter for improved stability. It's also available in a 'Mid' higher-cut boot version.

Chameleon Web

Out right now is the Chameleon II Web. It's pretty obviously aimed squarely at the market Keen has opened up for hybrid shoes which offer sandal-type ventilation with more toe protection than you get from a classic rafting sandal.

Essentially it's based on the Chameleon Slam but with panels cut away for cooler feet so you're getting a proper shoe, but with more air flow. Available in leather for £70 and synthetic for £60.

One For The Gurlz

Finally, the Siren Ventilator is a women's-specific walking shoe that's been designed specifically to work with women's biomechanics.

Because women's hips are wider, they have a tendency to overpronate slightly which can cause discomfort and even injuries. To help prevent this, the Siren features a corrective EVA midsole with a higher arch support and denser foam in strategic areas to optimise foot strike.

Dubbed Q-Form, it's an interesting move and should work a bit like a simple orthotic or one of the aftermarket stability footbeds.
