Does it grip as tight as a single layer I wonder?
In theory as the tension tries to loosen the strap any movement drags the outer layer and the D ring tighter together with the first ring and stops further movement. With a double layer it would be possible for the innner and outer layers to slide a little and therefore the inner layer to move without moving the outer layer and pulling the D rings tighter together.
In practice I would guess you might not notice much difference especially with a bit of dirt and grit adding friction and slightly worn straps which also don't slide over each other as easily.
I would tend to leave the loop long and the single end short though just to reduce the possibility of somehow snagging it.
