National Geographic Everest Special Unmissable

The new National Geographic is a 50th anniversary Everest special and it's unmissable, some great stuff on the web site as well. Oi, come back...

The latest edition of National Geographic, which is appearing on the shelves right now, is a fantastic Everest 50th Anniversary special.

It comes with a free fold-out, double-side Everest map and has a black and white pic of Sir Edmund Hillary on the cover. Inside there are 50-odd pages devoted to the mountain including a beautifully illustrated history of climbing on the mountain, Hilary's own recollections of the first ascent and an outline of how altitude affects the human body.

There's also a great article looking at the Sherpas, their culture, history and present, again with some astonishing photography.

We'd go as far as saying that if you're interested in Everest, this is a must buy and a bargain even at £3.50.

Web site too...

Also well worth a look, particularly if you have broadband, is the National Geographic web site where you can read excerpts from the current issue, plus the link to the Virtual Everest climb and special Everest focus.

There's enough there to waste a long, rainy afternoon at work, guaranteed. Thanks to OM member Alex Ford for reducing us all to a level of zero productivity...

The May edition of Geographical (Royal Geographical Society, £3.25), is entirely devoted to Everest, with some absolutely cracking photos. The only possibly cheesy bit is the limited edition "Mount Everest" pen, a snip at £395 on page 10...must rush out and get one...

Only £395, a bargain...

Coincidentally, we're preparing an entire range of OM 50th Anniversary Everest commemorative limited edition items from the acclaimed Frankly Minging stable. Remember our deathless foot and mouth commemorative plates? If not, do a search for Frankly Minging...

Items will range from a life-sized ceramic replica of the mountain itself to the Hillary Tenzing clock. As the hour strikes, tiny Hillary and Tenzing figures clamber onto the top of the clock and wave their axes in triumph - one wave per hour. At midnight a transistorised voice booms out, 'We knocked the bastard off'. There's loads more including Everest underpants with the slogan 'Because It's There' and a Brian Blessed climber doll that you can dress in period costume to match your mood.

Full details in the very near future.
