New From Paramo For Spring 2009

Paramo Velez Adventure Light on general release plus cunning windproof / fleece duo new.

We thought you'd appreciate a quick preview of what's new from Paramo for this spring 2009, which includes a new lighter version of the Velez Adventure and an interesting fleece / windproof combo.

Velez Adventure Light

We've already reviewed the Velez Adventure Light, which has been available as a limited edition from Paramo's London store over the winter, but from this spring, the garment will be on general release from Paramo retailers all over the UK.

A lighter windproof shell fabric saves a whopping 19 per-cent over a standard Velez Light without compromising performance. It also features a very decent adjustable fixed hood with wired peak and we've found it very effective for walking, climbing and biking. The fixed hood also means that it's eligible for adventure race use and at 590 grammes all in, the weight is reasonable too.

Summit Hoodie and Fuera Ascent Windproof Jacket duo

The idea behind the combination of fleece and windproof is to give similar levels of protection to the top of the range Aspira Smock or Jacket but with more flexibility. Worn together they should be effectively waterproof or either garment can be used on its own. Paramo estimates that it should handle temperatures from 20 above to 20 below freezing point.

Matching two-way torso and arm zips should give efficent cooling, there's a helmet-friendly wired hood and drop-tail for maximum protection, freedom of movement is said to be 'excellent' and there are plenty of handy pockets for stowage.

Paramo's designer, Greg Care says ‘the focus of this design is to produce an upper body ‘system’ that allows complete freedom of movement and avoids changes on routes.  When climbing, geared up with a rope harness and pack I need one set of water repellent clothing that can be easily adjusted without garment changes – allowing a comfortable transition from the cold morning to a warm/hot afternoon.

'Having this inevitably increases safety, reduces time loss, eliminates the need to remove my pack, with less risk of dropping gear and no disruption to my climbing rhythm.  The Fuera Ascent combined with the Summit Hoodie does just that.’

Cambia Sport Range

Made from reversible Paramater T, Cambia baselayers are designed to be high wicking one way round and warmer the other as well as being lightweight, stretchy and fast drying. New Cambia Sport Ts are cut for minimal flapping and come in a two-tone design in vest, short sleeve and long-sleeved form. There's also a new short-sleeved zip-neck offeriing extra cooling options.

Mpre Information

You can catch Paramo's new designs at the OS Outdoors Show at the NEC, 27-29 March, 2009. More information at www.paramo.co.uk

Looks interesting. The fit appears more fitted than other Paramo stuff.

Jon - are those pit zips as such or do they stop at the top of the arm. Do you know when these going to be available?

I have reservations as to how effectivley waterproof the Fuera jacket and hoodie combo would be. During prolonged rainfall, not excessively heavy, i know my Fuera windprood smock leaks. I have by the way treated the jacket to a Nikwax wash and reproofing cycle.

The windproof element alone will not provide true waterproofing, just some level of water resistance. It all depends whether the fleece underneath fulfils the function of the Nikwax analogy pump liner, as in Paramo's waterproof jackets, to provide the full level of weather protection. It works fine with their previous split/combine pairing of the Taiga fleece and Fuera windproof, but the Taiga is bulky and heavy as fleeces go. I don't know whether the fabric for this new one is substantially different or not.
