It's smaller, it's cheaper and you can replace the fascia if
you're a sad techy fashion victim - the new Motorola T5422 two-way
radio is in the shops now alongside the popular T5522 units that we
tested
earlier this year.
As
far as we can tell, the 5422 offers similar functions and advantages
to the 5522, but in a smaller package and the price for a twin pack
including mains charger is around £20 less at £79.99.
As well as the option of different fascias - which isn't really a
particular useful plus point in our book - you can also customise the
ring tone of different units. The range is around two miles in good
conditions and you get ten call tones, eight channels and 38 codes,
the same as big brother.
You don't need any sort of licence to use them in the UK and
they're also compatible with all other Motorola two-way radios, use a
simple push and talk set up and if you want, you can simply buy extra
units and have mass outdoor conversations.
We found the T5522s excellent for multi-pitch mountain routes and
keeping track of big groups of walker or mountain bikers - stick one
at the front and one at the back and any delays or problems can be
easily communicated. On the negative side, range is variable,
particularly once you're out of line of sight and recharge time on
the batteries can be up to 14 hours.
