New GPSMAP 62 series units from Garmin.

Garmin has launched a new range of handheld, outdoors GPS units, the GPSMAP 62 series which, it says, introduces a sleek updated look, enhanced mapping options and many technical innovations and can also use OS mapping loaded on a microSD card.

The three-strong range of models all have a 2.6-inch, sunlight-readable colour display, a battery life of up to 20 hours, a high sensitivity GPS receiver and a quad helix antenna for good reception.

All three models are waterproof and have different levels of features. The basic GPSMAP 62 has a built-in worldwide basemap with shaded relief. Next up is the 62s which includes an electronic compass and wireless connectivity so it can share data with other compatible Garmin handhelds plus a barometric altimeter.

The top of the range GPSMAP 62st has preloaded 1:100,000 scale 'recreational mapping' with street level detail, contours POIs and land use descriptions for more than 33 countries across Europe with search facility.

As far as we can see, the new units sit below the touch-screen Oregon and Dakota models in the Garmin range and also have a smaller screen and larger case with push-button control, however they can match many of the functions including the ability to run OS mapping loaded on a microSD card.

To be honest I can't wait for these to arrive on the market.
I have for a while now been using my trusty 60CSX and whilst it is everything you'd need from a GPS unit, for me there's one thing missing - the Ordnance Survey mapping.
The Oregon range might have been the answer but having read reviews of them and the poor screen quality and the menu being rather counter-intuitive, I've held on. The Satmap Active 10 never looked right for me; a little cheap looking perhaps? I don't know.

I'll certainly be taking a closer look at these new Garmins though.
