The latest headtorch from Petzl
is the new Myo
RXP, a refined and regulated version of the excellent Myo
XP, with an instantly recognisable white and orange colour scheme to
differentiate it from the standard version.
So what's the difference? The RXP is both regulated and programmable.
The regulated bit means that rather than the output falling as the
batteries start to run down, clever circuitry keeps light levels
constant, so you're getting as much oomph as the batteries get tired as
you were when they were fresh.
On top of that, the Myo RXP allows you to programme the three light
level options to suit your own personal preferences and activities -
you can select from ten different light levels ranging from 8 to 140
lumens, plus as with the standard XP, a 160-lumen boost mode and, in
addition, a programmable flashing mode.
The RXP has also been designed to be compatible with lithium batteries,
which function better in extreme cold, has an LED battery level
indicator and a flip-up diffuser giving you a choice between spot and
flood beams. Like the standard XP, the RXP uses three AA cells for
power.
Suggested retail price is £75
and you can find more information at www.petzl.com

At last!! This sounds like Petzl have finally shaken themselves out of their historical market leader's complacency and begun to include some of the technology that competitors have been using for years. Regulated output and lithium battery compatibility are hardly ground-breaking, but they are welcome. I hope they feed these features into their other models soon too.... I'm not sure if programmable is anything more than a gimmick though.
