New Pod Sacs For 2010

New range of indestructible technical packs due out early 2010.

With stateside pack specialists Osprey and Gregory both upping the ante, it's good to see hardcore British pack brand Pod joining the party with a range of stunning looking new packs for 2010.

Pod built a reputation for indestructible Sheffield-made technical packs, but is now part of the Rab stable and aiming to build on that reputation with the new Granite range of packs. Like all Pod packs, they use top fabrics, triple-stitched construction, bar-tacked joins and attachment points that are part of the structure of the sac.

The Granites use fabrics which are so tough that the base reinforcement nylon actually wore out the abrasion testing pad at Leeds University, so that's tough. Generally the fabrics have been specially sourced and are Nylon. Buckles and fittings are top-end Duraflex items and very, very strong.

Prices range from £40 to £140 and they'll be in the shops early next year.

Very interesting, that full length zip. Like half duffel/half rucksack. Nice colours too. Any news on availability? My old Lowe Alpine Walkabout 35 now moults onto my clothes, and I never liked the bulging side-pockets. The 45l Granite looks tempting.

I'm not sure if it's a front zip into the main pack, or just a zip open front pocket...  given POD's reputation for gnarly, strong packs I suspect it's the latter. My Gregory Juxt daypack from 3 or 4 years ago has a pocket like that (a butterfly pocket I think they call it?), really useful too.

I'll be interested to see these. I wonder how the 50 litre Granite compares with the existing Black Ice, my favourite pack ever (as in 'if I could only keep one pack, that'd be it ).

Hmm, maybe. But on this page it says:

"Full length zip access through tough water‐resistant YKK zipper"

But then the close up photo of the Granite if it's the same bag, has me a bit confused.
