New Review - Columbia Omni Heat Base Layer

Columbia's unusual silver-dotted, reflective base layer tested.

The print on the inside of the collar of Columbia's Omni Heat Heavy Weight Long Sleeve Top reads 'Make Your Own Heat' and that, in a nut-shell, is what it's all about.

On the outside it looks normal enough, but on the inside, Omni Heat fabric is faced with tiny, reflective, silvery dots. The idea, as with a space blanket, is that the dots radiate heat back inwards towards your body, making the fabric warmer than you'd expect. And becase the silvery layer isn't continuous, it still breathes and wicks.

It looks a little, well, 'unusual' and it's easy to dismiss it as a gimmick, but how does it work out on the hills. Check out our full review to find out.
