Latest OutdoorsMagic review is a look at the Haglöfs Barrier Pro Jacket, a lightweight PrimaLoft-filled insulation garment that weighs in at just 330 grammes for a medium.

It's one of the new breed of lightweight insulated tops that's somewhere between a lightly insulated windproof and a full on duvet-type jacket with the damp-friendly synthetic filling making it an ideal choice for damp UK conditions.

wow! a 60gsm primaloft jacket with lightweight face fabric - amazing....oh, wait...there are millions of these around already: Montane prism, Rab Generator, Patagoina nano puff....

why should we be excited?

Not your day is it, Mike? The Prism is 40gsm

And the new Generators are 100gsm.

Yes, its far from unique in conception. Also of course non trivially heavier than their old LIM barrier.

What I think they can claim as distinctive is the fit -  I'm way off the tall/thin extreme and its the first light, hooded, PL thing I've tried on which is anywhere near workable fit wise. Actually its near perfect, which was a nice surprise.

Longer body I think and certainly a genuinely longer arm length than the xenon and nanopuff. Maybe a slightly closer fit, dunno. Slightly 'fancy' (adjustable, minute foam peak) hood, although no idea if thats worth its weight or not.

So I'm grateful anyhow Quite a minority concern perhaps.

(actually, not needing a mega warm belay jacket thing, I rationalised my PL stuff down to just a hooded one of these.).
