New Stuff!

New in for test this week a cunning gizmo from Grivel that makes a trekking pole into an ice axe, Berghaus's new 35-litre technical pack and an interesting new softshell from an unexpected source.

This week's selection of kit new to the OM test fleet is an interesting one with an innovative Grivel device that allows you to use a trekking pole as a self-arrest ice axe. Berghaus's very neat new climbing pack, the Duel, and a soft-shell jacket from the masters of economical outdoor gear at Regatta.

Grivel Condor

It's not out until this autumn, but we already have an advance sample of the new Grivel Condor. It's a cunning retrofit extension to a trekking pole that replaces the top section of a standard-sized trekking pole and functions as pole handle, but with an additional 'ice blade insert' - in other words, it adds an ice axe pick to the head of your trekking pole.

Grfivel says that it's suitable both for self-arrest but can also be used for daggering on trekking peaks and for glacier travel. It's a neat idea that should rationalise your kit selection. It's going to be available either with an aluminium top pole section or, if you're that way inclined, with a carbon fibre one.

Weight, by the way, is 292 grammes, the blade is made from high carbon steel, so no bendy alloy picks, and it folds up out of harm's way or when you're using it as a pure ski or trekking pole.

We'll give it a practical whirl shortly and let you know what we think.

Berghaus Duel Pack

Also due out in just a few months is the new Berghaus Duel technical day sac, which takes the high quality construction of the existing Crag and puts it in a smaller, 35-litre package. We've got one here and it certainly feels solid thanks to abrasion resistant Ardura 6S fabric and a Ballstic front and base.

It's no lightweight, Berghaus claim around 1500 grammes, but you can strip it down to a kilo by removing hip and waist belt. A lot of the weight seems to be in the Fusion Pro back system by the way, with its malleable back panel and removable vertaplate.

What we do really like is the combination of a classic technical sac shape with a panel-loading design allowing really easy access to the main compartment. You get all the mod-cons you'd expect as well, from ice-axe loops through to hip-belt gear loops. Price will be £60, which seems pretty reasonable for a high spec sac. If you want something cheaper in the same cacpacity range, take a look at the Arete.

Regatta Format Softshell

A few years back, soft shell was all high end technical kit from niche mountaineering brands, things have changed though and the idea of soft shell is prermeating through to more mainstream brands.

One of those is Regatta which has a very neat soft shell jacket in the autumn winter 2005 range. The fabric is a Schoeller-like woven stretch material with a fleecy inner and smooth outer surface. It's wind resistant rather than windproof and a DWR treatment should give it decent water-shedding properties as well.

We don't have full details yet and we don't have a price. We don't even have a pic as the OM camera is having an off day, but it looks nice, feels nice and is part of the X-Ert performance section of Regatta's range, so should get a neater, more active cut as well.

We think it's going to be a bit of a bargain. Watch this space...
