Nike ACG - New For Spring

Quick look at what's new from Nike ACG in the next month or so.

Nike is one of the biggest performance clothing brands in the world, but one that's often overlooked by outdoors people, that's a shame as the company uses excellent fabrics, construction and design to produce some very effective kit, particularly at the fast-moving end of the market under the Nike ACG label. Here's some of what's in store for spring / summer 2008.

Minima Gets Stretch

The new Minima Stretch jacket is based on ACG's established Minima shell and and also uses Gore-Tex Paclite for lightweight waterproofing. As you might have guessed from the name, it uses Gore-Tex Stretch Paclite panels to improve the fit of the jacket. This is the women's version.

No Sew Composite Jacket

In another example of 'does what it says on the can' naming, the No Sew is a lightweight softshell which uses a water and wind resistant fabric and saves weight and bulk with the use of fused seams. There are also ACG's 'Element-defiant' weather-resistant zips and an embossed design on the face fabric from a proper, high-faluting design house no less...

Baggy Trousers...

The Cordillera Baggy Pant is ACG's standard issue trail pant with a difference. The combination of a stretch nylon fabric and a crotch gussett gives them added mobility, apparently they're a favourite of Nike ACG base jumper Laurent Niol.

Vertical Shell

Alongside their lightweight kit, the Vertical Shell is ACG's 'new skool performance take on the Anorak. It uses waterproof and breathable Storm-FIT three-ply fabric in an unusual smock-stytle design. There are venting front pockets, adjustable hem cord and a peaked hood. Looks interesting.

All Things Considered....

Alongside the Trail range above, ACG's Considered range is an evironmentally aware collection of clothing and footwear using sustainable and recycled materials and construction techniques.

That means organic cotton and, in the case of footwear, snap-fit technology to minimise the use of adhesives. Clothing is designed to maximise the fabric cut from a material block to minimise wastage.

Excellent fabrics - check
Excellent construction - check
Excellent design - failed

Granted, my experience of ACG stuff is limited to what I see in TK Maxx, but their designs are often promising, but subject to fundamental flaws. For instance, the old Cordillera soft shell had a breast pocket (for MP3 or phone, I imagine). Only it had an upward-facing opening, and no closure. So guess what happens when it rains...? I notice a similar flaw on the Minima jacket; granted, it has a zip and the pocket is angled, but it's still a rain trap when opened.

To be fair, some of their items are pretty good; it just annoys me that a company of that size can't engage their brains (or maybe actually do some trials of the kit) before going to manufacture. A lack of joined-up thinking in many cases.

Hmm, not the best pictures to tell for sure, but the hoods on those jackets don't look too much like excellent design....
