OMer Opens Outdoor Food Shop

Chicken tikka, spaghetti bolognaise, or cheese and mushroom pasta? That is the question.

Adventure FoodOUTDOORSmagic member, Chris, OutdoorsGrub.co.uk (who used to be called Zubald), has just opened a new outdoor food shop to help tickle your palate after a day in the hills.

Outdoors Grub is an online-only store and it sells a range of lightweight dehydrated dinners from brands such as Mountain House, Adventure Food and Be-Well. And the great thing is that because all you have to do is add boiling water to the pouch and then eat from it directly, you don't have to wash up afterwards:-) Just put your feet up and enjoy the scenery, or the stars, depending on the time of year.

As for the taste, well, that’s a matter of preference, but here are some of the meals that Outdoors Grub have lined up…

For breakfast, there’s creamy oat and wheat porridge with hazelnuts, apple pieces and raisins – sounds like a good start. For dinner it’s time for Chicken tikka, unless you’re veggie of course, in which case, fear not, there are delicacies to suit you as well. Vegetable tikka with rice, for example. And for pudding, it's custard with mixed fruits.

Outdoors Grub owner Chris Frizelle says “I've personally taste tested every single food product we sell: if I didn't like it then it didn't make it into the shop!”

The only products he hasn’t tasted are the bits and bobs of hardware that you can also buy from Outdoors Grub, including an insulated mug with a proper cafetiere plunger ,so you don’t have to sacrifice a true Italian start to the morning, and a Polycarbonate spoon that weighs less than 15g – lighter than some titanium spoons – and costs a mere 94p. Now if that’s not a good spoon for a credit crunch, we’d like to know what is!

There’s also water purification available if you’ll be sampling your outdoor grub in regions that don’t have a drinking water supply.

For full details of grub, spoons, and much more, visit http://www.outdoorsgrub.co.uk. At a first glance, the website looks well laid out and it's easy to find what you want, with categories for breakfast, main meals and deserts, and information pages on food allergies and vegetarian meals as too.

Now then, what do we fancy eating for dinner today?

"They're heavier than dehydrated food as you're carrying the water content of the meal as well as the solids".

Er, no. The meals are dehydrated or freeze-dried. You add boiling water to the pouch and then wait while it cooks. You're not carrying the water.

It may well be there Chris, that Susan is thinking of stuff like the forces pouched ration pack boil in the bags instant meals there, as her main point of reference as to what a 'boil in the bag' meal can be like. As you say though, there are in fact a few variations upon the theme!

Either that, or maybe she just is thinking along the lines there of one needing to be carrying with one an extra amount of water, in carrying and using all dehydrated foods, to spur them to life at mealtimes perhaps?

Talking of the UK forces rat pack boil in the bag ones here for a moment though, do not eat the pasta and meatballs one! You might regret it! I did, on eating one the other day here, as it is swimming in a sauce that is far too heavily over spiced up with a ton of unnecessary herbs! It was still repeating on me some fifteen hours later! Not what one wants really! Someone please email or write to that swearng chef bloke of tv fame, Gordon, to sort those things out for the better!

Z, I do wish you all the best of luck in the world there mate, I'm pleased about the new store; plus very pleased for you too, in being brave enough to try to do a business start-up in these uncertain times, and too proud to know it is you, an OM'er I've often chatted to online in the OM forum here! Good stuff there, Z!
