OS Outdoors Show Not Far Off...

This year's Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show is due to arrive with the first hints of spring in March, here are some provisional details of what's going to be the biggest and best so far...

A gentle pre-minder - yes, we invented that word - that the Ordnance Survey Outdoors Show is back for 2005 and not that far off either.

This year's dates are 18-20 March and the venue is, once again, the NEC in Birmingham. The organisers are still confirming exhibitors, but we can tell you already that it looks like the show's going to the the biggest ever and stretches right across a wide field of outdoors stuff.

There are five exhibitions incorporated into the main show this year: Canoe 2005, Climb 2005, Go Diving, Adventure Sports and Adventure Travel and as well as some of the features we've got used to over the past few years, some new, interesting looking stuff as well.

Among the old faithfuls are the Craghoppers Adventure Travel Theatre, with a schedule of experienced travellers talking about their cutting-edge experiences, the BMC Mountain Theatre with TGO featuring 'world-renowned climbing experts, the Berghaus Theatre with its stream of star speakers and for underwater types, a Watersports Theatre.

There'll also be a load of exhibitors from gear companies, through adventure travel operators and toourist information bodies through to extreme technologies like the Bananaguard, no really.

Things we're looking forward to include the Freestyle Ice Wall and Polar's AXN Fitnessi Challenge. We're not exactly sure what the heck that is, but it promises all sorts of competitve nastiness. And while we're talking about competitions, some of the world's top boulderers will be stretching their tendons in The North Face UIAA-ICC Bouldering World Cup.

Rather more practically there's going to be a Have-s-Go Zone, where you'll be able to try out the latest gear from major outdoors brands. Oh, and last but definitely not least, Jennings will be running the 'Cumberland Arms', a 'great British pub' it says here, or check out the Merrell Beach Bar with 'Britain's best inland beach' - it says here - and appropriate refreshments.

National Outdoor Week - 12-20 March

The Show also coincides with National Outdoors Week which includes a range of outdoor events right across the country including The Big Walk a series of fund-raising events in support of Comic Relief's Red Nose day. Details at www.nationaloutdoorweek.org.uk

I note that the Outdoor Adventure Show returns to Birmingham for another year. This may be okay if you stay south of the border as I suppose Birmingham can be reached, maybe not easily, but from most parts of England and the vast majoority of the population reside south of the border.

Lochaber is promoting itself as the Outdoor Capital of Britain and in my view correctly so, even though it is on the opposite side of the country.

What are the views of the forum on the Outdoor Adventure Show coming to Scotland. I appreciate that there is nowhere in Lochaber that could hold such an exhibition but could Glasgow?

Interested in the views of the forum and that of our TGO editor.

I sort of remember there being an Outdoors Show in Glasgow about a couple of years ago but do know any more about it or whether it is an annual event.

The Birmingham one is pretty well established now and seems to attract a large attendance from all over the place, both exhibitors and customers (we have been booked up since last year with friends who want to come and stay that weekend!). Before that there used to be Indoor Climbing Championships at the National Indoors Arena which were organised by BMC which were also very popular and they have transferred to the NEC show.

It may not be obvious from this forum but there is a large climbing and mountaineering contingent in Birmingham and the West Midlands and lots of interest by schools and clubs. Following on from the lively, packed to the seams meeting before Christmas organised by BMC about the closing of Rockface there is another meeting at Fairbridge this coming Thursday evening when hopefully we shall learn more about the possibility of two new climbing walls. It was just so good to see so many kids and parents in the audience, as well as students and climbers of all ages who were gutted at the thought of having nowhere to climb.

I guess they choose locations on the basis of population density and accessibility. So London and Birmingham are the obvious choices (although the road system grinds to a halt on a regular basis...).

On that basis, I would have thought Glasgow merited a show of its own. If there was one, but it is no longer run, then one must assume it is because it wasn't successful. These things are commercial enterprises, after all. If they make a profit, they'll continue. If they don't, they'll stop.

If you are lucky enough to live within easy reach of Lochaber, consider yourself lucky, and take pity on those who live near Birmingham and London. We may be able to go to outdoor shows with more ease, but actually getting out to the delights of Lochaber is rather more difficult. And, for all my love of kitfondling, I know where I'd rather be...
