The latest from Osprey is the Mutant 38 mountain pack in the shops shortly.

Osprey's new technical mountain pack, the Mutant 38 is appearing in an outdoors shop near you right about now and it looks like a bit of a beast.

The new pack has been developed specifically for climbing and is intended as a simple, lightweight sac that'll cope both with mountain day trips and multi-day routes.

We've got one on the way to us, so expect a first look very soon, but we can tell you that features include a n ErgoPull Hipbelt that wraps back around the sac to provide extra clearance when wearing a harness, a floating removable lid, Hypalon racking loops, a removable three-fold Bivi Pad, Thermoformed EVA back panel and a Gorilla Grip patch for durability in the face of rocks and crampons.

Capacity is 38 litres in medium back length - 35 for the short, 41 for the large and weight is around 1300 grammes, but strippable to 950 grammes, colours are red or black and price around £70.

Take a look at this Osprey Packs YouTube clip for a full run down of the new pack's features...

At last, a sensible size (I think) pack for that is light when stripped from Osprey in a couple of good colour schemes, that means i won't have to suffer the indignity of the Talon 33 in either the blue or orange and i won't have to buy two packs, another make in a sensible colour now ready for snowdon trip and more. And then the Talon in the dark grey that has been mentioned for launch in the Spring.

Jon, do you know the dimensions of the back length for the various litre sizes?

Got one here now, more details next week, but looks like a very well thought out pack on first acquaintance.
