Pure genius from the guys over at PHD with the launch of their new online design your own sleeping bag web site.

It does just what it says on the box, allowing you to design your own sleeping bag from the ground up. After logging on, you get a choice of 'free' or 'guided' options and from there select the basic design, weight of down and fill power.

After that you get to customise pretty much everything about the bag from inner and outer fabrics and colour, through zip options, draft tube configurations, and onto more advance options like bivvy cowls, the type of cord used for closures, bag length, extra down filling and more.

At the end of it all, the software spits out a fully customised bag which you can then order online from PHD using a secure server. Our bag came out at £200, but that was with only 10 grammes of fill, see below.

It's an absolutely fantastic idea and the only one of its kind we've come across, though we've seen similar sites where you can design your own bicycle.

We did encounter one minor issue using a Mac and that was a total inability to have more than 10 grammes of filling in the bag... Ooops, we're guessing that PC users will be warmer than us fashion victim Apple users. If you have the same options, you could always just contact PHD direct using their main web site.

Who?

Pete Hutchinson Designs are specialist down and lightweight equipment manufacturers and were founded by Pete Hutchinson, the man who started Mountain Equipment rolling in the early eighties. They've forgotten more about high spec down equipment and clothing than most companies know...

What a great site, ta to David Gray for telling us about it. Only downside is that as a Macintosh user, it seems I can only have 10 grammes of down filling :-(

The fillpower to temperature ratings are a bit funny even when they work. By jiggling back and forth through the different fill powers, the temperature ratings shift slighty. I played around with it for a while and got the 200 weight bag to shift from +7c to +11c.

Neat stuff though.

mmm -17 bag weighing only 1274g. exactly what i want, as well. i was going to go for either macpac or fairydown, as i dont like the phd stock desings, but seeing this may have changed my mind.

my specs:
outer = dryshell
inner = pertex
outer colour = gold
inner colour = charcoal
stuff pattern = std
zip = short left
down = 650g 800 fill
overfill = no
collar = yes
hood = nonstretch
collar = stretch
bivvy = no
length = std
width = slim

out of interest what did everyone else go for?
