Platypus was the first hydration system brand to really made an impression on walkers and climbers in the UK and they've just announced a logical development with the launch of a five-strong range of Platypus Origin hydration packs.
The new hydration packs are said to be both light and 'weatherproof' with a contoured fit suited to fast-moving activities and outdoor sports generally. Each pack comes complete with a Platypus Big Zip SL reservoir and is sized to take either the two or three-liter versions without affecting the capacity of the pack itself.
Closure is by weather-resistant zippers and there are multiple tubing options so the user can locate the bite-valve where it works best for them. The fabric of the packs is described as 'weatherproof' and seams are, it says here, taped and sewn.
Other design touches include what Platypus calls BioCurve -pressure-relieving, contoured centre back panels – a stretech woven fabric to give comfort at contact points and simple to use storage loops for gear and helmets. They certainly look the part in the images we've seen.
“With ten-plus years testing and perfecting hydration reservoirs, we’ve tried a lot of packs.” said Erik Flink, Division Director, Hydration and Water Treatment for Cascade Designs. “We recognized the need to build a pack from the ground up, with our Big Zip SL reservoir as the foundation. This line is the result of countless hours of obsessing over the details using the same design attributes we apply to all Platypus products―deliver maximum performance as simply as possible―and our testers have been thrilled with the results.”
There are five different sizes in the range ranging from the Origin 3, which is designed for one to three hours or activity like a quick trail run and takes a two-liter reservoir along with three-litres of storage capacity right through to the Origin 32.30 and 32.22 which features a three-litre reservoir and a capacity of 32-liters and is available in two torso lengths. In between there are nine-liter, and 22-liter variants.
The packs will be available early in 2011 and we're looking forward to seeing how they perform. We're big fans of the new Osprey Hydraulics range and the bar is set high, but with the expertise of Platyus and parent company Cascade Designs, we're expecting big things.
