Ppppick Up A Penguin...
If you pick up a penguin and it's not a chocolate-covered biccy, don't panic, it could be a new technical washing liquid designed to keep your kit performing at optimum levels

Regular OM users will, of course, be aware that you can't wash
your expensive, high tech outdoors kit in just any old detergent -
if
you're not, then read this - and expect it to carry on working as
the designers intended.
The
bottom line is that the chemicals in conventional detergents, both
liquids and powders, biological or non-biological, can damage the
treatments that help your clothing to repel water and maintain
breathability.
To keep outdoors clothing functioning properly, you need to use
either a purpose-designed tech cleaner or pure soap. Both Nikwax and
Grangers produce suitable cleaners, but now there's a new kid on the
block in the form of Penguin Sport-Wash. Easily recognisable because,
doh, it has a picture of a penguin on it, yet isn't a
chocolate-coated biscuit, the new wash is pure soap-based and
suitable for use on waterproof, down and synthetic insulation it says
here.
It also claims to be capable of removing the worst stains, but as
we didn't have any stains to remove, we can't confirm or deny it. In
use it seems as effective as any other technical cleaner we've used,
which means, simply, that you have another option if you want to wash
your waterproofs.
The price is £8.50 for an 18 fluid ounce bottle, which will
last for 18 washes, making it pretty good value and it should be in
the shops now. For stockist details call 01923 242233 or visit

What's a fluid ounce when it's at home?? I hope this isn't a move to start quoting prices in pounds, shilling, pence! Surely in this day and age we should be given both. The only imperial measure of liquid that i know is the ubiquitous 'pint'. What's the view of other OMers (as if i need to ask ;-)) oh, and p.s. i know i can google conversions; 18 US fluid ounces = 532.323534 milliliters (sic).

What's this with US fluid ounces? They're all the same. It's the pints that are different! Ours has 20 ozs and the US one 16. 4 Gills make a fluid ounce. 20 oz to a Pint 8 Pints to a Gallon. 9 gallons to a Firkin 18 gallons to a Kilderkin 36 gallons to a Barrel 54 gallons to a Hogshead 100 gallons to a Tun Spirits were sold in 1/6th of a gill (in England and Wales, 1/5ths or 1/4 in Scotland) up until recently when they were changed to 25ml. Bring back imperial measures - Napoleon has a lot to answer for!! (October is coming!!!)
