Primaloft To Have 15% More Loft

New technologies promise more loft and more warmth for the leading synthetic insulation fibre.

Hot news for anyone passionate about synthetic insulation with the launch of a new PrimaLoft Convexion Technology which, the brand says, 'significantly boosts loft and warmth'.

PrimaLoft's Convexion Technology is claimed to provide 15% more loft and greater warmth for PrimaLoft® One and PrimaLoft® Sport. That's a pretty impressive statement given the PrimaLoft is already widely accepted to be the most effective synthetic insulation fibre out there and continues the gradual evoution of synthetic down-type fibres towards a point where the can compete with down for warmth to weight ratiio.

The company says that the 'secret behind the innovation is a combination of manufacturing expertise and advanced fibre technology.' The PrimaLoft research and development team has apparently tested hundreds of fibre combinations and manufacturing techniques before finding the optimum mix.

That's in the future for now, but the 2008 PrimaLoft range of products includes PrimaloftEco which uses 50 per-cent recycled content from both domestic and industrial waste and has the same performance qualities as normal PrimaLoft.

On top of that, PrimaLoft Yarn is now being used in garments including socks which are claimed to pull moisture away from the skin and allow it to escape easily using a combination of the water repelling properties of PrimaLoft and the wicking qualities of wool, it says here.

Interesting stuff. PrimaLoft's always been excellent for damp, cool conditions use. now it looks like it's going to be even warmer. More information at www.primaloft.com.

"towards a point where the can compete with down for warmth to weight ratio"

15% more insulation value would only put it in competition with the poorest quality down & feather fill.  They're still along way off.

How will this increase in warmth effect the durability of the product?

I've been very disappointed with the primaloft filled clothing that I have tried.

IMO - for synthetics, I've found polarguard delta and climashield clothing both offer vastly superior performance.

Primaloft seems to go very thin and loses its loft in no time. It also doesn't have any 'guts' and gets completely flattened by any strong wind. In the garments I've tried, this reduces them to the effectiveness of a pertex windshell or similar with little significant insulation/thermal property to speak of.

Guess I'm not a huge fan then huh??
