Soft shell denim jeans? Well, sort of... Alpkit's latest CoLab project
is called Jeanius
and promises outdoor-friendly, denim pants that are both windproof and
highly water resistant and what's more, by taking part in the
development process, you can land a pair at a discounted price right
now.
Traditionally cotton jeans have been the enemy for outdoors purposes,
with their unmistakable cold, wet, stiff slow-drying approach to
rainfall, but Epic's denim fabric has changed alll that. The fabric
company takes denim and encapsulated the fibres of the material with
silicon meaning that the fibres are sealed, but leaving 'micro holes'
between them to allow the jeans to breathe.
Chunk explains Jeanius...
Alpkit has tweaked the basic jeans cut for outdoors use as well -
there's a diamond crotch to allow easy movement for, say scrambling,
climbing or biking and articulated knees so you can, well, bend zee
knees. All good stuff.
We've actually been using a pair for around a year now and we're
impressed. We won't prejudice your opinion by going into detail, but
the bottom line is you can wear jeans and still laugh in the face of
rainfall. For a bit anyway... Oh, and they look nice too.

Is this a similar idea to Hi-tec's 'Ion-mask'. And if so, does that mean it could be aplied to anything made of fabric? For instance I use workmans trousers for walking in good weather cos the cut is right for free leg movement, and the large pockets are ideal for stuffing thing into, but they're appalling in the wet, perhaps they could be treated the same? It would be fun to wear just to wind up all the people you meet on a wet windy mountain top. You can just imagine them in the pub that eve talking about the irresponsible clothing choices of some obviously very inexperienced people.
