A quick Friday afternoon gear news snippet left over from last week's Harrogate outdoors trade fest...

The fellas at Rab are doing a bit of rationalising, so from next January or so, the range of bivvy bags and tents currently badged under the outdoordesigns name are moving into the Rab stable. Not only that, but they'll be made from eVENT rather than Gore-Tex.

Also out there from Rab will be eVENT gaiters, the first that we know of, and the company's lightest eVENT waterproof jacket, the minimalist Drilium which is reckoned to weigh in at a mere 350 grammes and is designed for 'summer hillwalking, backpacking and multisport use'.

The Drilium - above - will sell at £160 and should offer a really good combination of breathability and protection if our previous experience of eVENT fabrics holds good.

Try Before You Buy

Talking of which, just a reminder that the Rab 'Try Before You Buy' eVENT waterproof, er, try before you buy promotion is up and running. It means you can borrow a Rab eVENT waterproof shell for up to 48 hours and try eVENT for yourself.

The test jackets are available in a selection of men's and women's styles and available from 60 selected Rab stockists. You can find details of your nearest one at www.rab.uk.com

Am I the only one who thinks this jacket looks really dated? Massive black water resistant zips went out of fashion years ago (Most jackets use those really thin ones and now colour matched to the fabric). Rab may use some of the latest fabrics but their designs are stuck in the past.

Their stuff may function well but when so many other companies are making good stuff it often comes down to colour, style, and detailing when making the purchasing decision.

I am pretty sure most will agree?

What I can't see about it - are the pockets venting, does it have a hood and does it have a drawcord hem - has anybody managed to spy that out?

If so, it would look worth waiting for to me.

I don't care a hoot about fashion, but I'd prefer a flap in front and even over the water resistant pocket zips. I do care about colour though and I would rather not buy a jacket that isn't green, gray or blue.

Looks ok to me, g0_Bandit, but I'm not particularly fashion aware :)
