A tenner for a pair of running socks...

If you run to stay fit for the outdoors, then you'll appreciate just how hard it is to find a really good pair of running socks. Fluffy ones tend to feel nice and cushioned at first but collapse with wear and cause blisters, the twin-skin variety feel a bit odd and lacking in cushioning as the two layers slide against each other. Well no more, Ron Hill's Blisterguard socks are the best running socks we've ever used, period.

After around six months of regular use and abuse, we've had no blisters, no pulled stitches, no problems and they feel as padded and cushioned as when they first came out of the packet. Hvaing said that, they're not so bulky as to screw up the fit of your running shoes. They're even tolerably white, which is unusual.

The Blisterguards (from now the BGs) pack a fair bit of technology into a small sock. CoolMax is used in the fabric to up wicking performance, and it works, then there's something called Teflon 'Friction Free' construction which seems to mean extra loopstitch padding at primary blister areas on the toes and heel and finally, the mid-foot area has a Lycra arch support for a snug fit and the toe seam is flat to avoid chafing. Nice.

God knows, ten quid is a lot for a pair of socks, but they work brilliantly and give every indication of being nigh on indestructible and like we said, no blisters. Oh, they make Union Jack patterned shorts too, how Damon Albarn is that?

Verdict: Best running sock we've ever used bar none. Padded but not too padded. Durable, fit well, wick well and we've never had a blister using them on runs up to ten miles in all conditions. Great sock, look at it as an investment. It would be nice if you could buy darker colours for the fells though.

Pushed for time: Ye Gods, ten quid for a running sock? But they work brilliantly, with good wicking performance courtesy of CoolMax, good fit due to a Lycra mid foot panel and extra padding where it's need on toe and heel. No bllisters, no complaints - as cushioned now as they were straight out of the box six months ago. Not cheap but worth it. Darker shade would work better for fell running though.
