Search and Rescue dog handlers to use Satmap Active 10 GPS units on the hill.

Satmap's Active 10 GPS unit is the first GPS device to receive an
endorsement from SARDA, the Search & Rescue Dog Association and
will be used by all SARDA dog handlers on the hill.
 SARDA
is a voluntary organisation which trains members of mountain rescue
teams to become handlers of air-scenting search and rescue dogs. GPS is
increasingly used in mountain rescue situations because of its
time-saving potential and ease of use compared to a conventional map
and compass in poor conditions where it may be wet, windy and dark.
Steve Ward, Equipment Officer for SARDA England, said:
“Having purchased my own Active 10 unit I was only too glad
to recommend it as a piece of standard kit for every graded SARDA
England Dog Handler. Now every Handler is saving time on the hill and
searching time equals lives saved.”
Where the Active 10 differs from most GPS units is that it uses
Ordnance Survey mapping displayed on a large coloured screen and shows
your current position and your track along with other useful
information like route elevation, time distance and speed.
The unit is built from the ground up to work in the outdoors and uses
maps stored on SD cards at both 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale.
Satmap is understandably chuffed at the endorsement with MD Richard
Calthrop-Owen commenting: “We always intended the Satmap
Active 10 to be used in harsh environments and getting the approval of
an organisation which is made up of true experts in the field of search
and rescue is a really big deal for us.”

Presume dogs must be PC users then as still no sign of the long promised support for Apple Macs. Shame as with that it would be the mutz!
