Satmap Launches Active 10 Plus

New bundle includes postcode search and paves the way for international mapping on the Active 10 GPS.

Satmap has just announced the launch of the Active 10 Plus, a development of their existing Active 10 GPS unit which they're billing as 'a one-stop GPS solution which gives outdoors sports enthusiasts all the hardware, software and route planning tools that they need'.

Satmap Active 10The new unit has three major changes from the Active 10 GPS: it includes a World Base Map for international use, a postcode look-up facility which allows users to identify any relevant UK location using a postcode and works with any of Satmap's digital mapping and finally, the Plus comes bundled with the rechargeable Lithium Polymer power pack.

The new unit is priced at £379.99, which is a saving of £120 compared to buying all the elements separately. The standard Active 10 retails for £293.61.

And while you can buy and install the world base map and power pack to existing Active 10 units, the postcode look-up cannot be retrofitted to older units due to licensing requirements. Technically, the actual GPS Unit is identical to the Active 10.

European Mapping

The World Base Map signals Satmap's imminent launch of European mapping with maps of the Netherlands, Norway and other European countries set to be available by Easter, 2009.

'Everything they need to get started...'

Satmap MD Richard Calthrop-Owen comments:

“We’ve been listening to our customers and this offering has been put together based on their feedback.  With the Active 10 Plus customers have everything they need to get started – our latest software, a variety of power options and free access to the Route Planner and Route Share Network. We’ve also included a third off our hugely popular site-centred map.”

More Information

The Active 10 Plus is scheduled to be available from 23 March both direct from Satmap and from Satmap retailers. More details at www.satmap.com

The Satmap, along with  most other GPS units still are no use in Northern Ireland as None of the companies seem bothered about obtaining Licences for this part of the UK.!

Not entirely fair. As far I'm aware the position is that the OSNI are looking for commercial partners but no deals have been agreed as yet - that doesn't mean companies can't be bothered, it could be for a multitude of reasons.

Hi Dave,

Fair enough, I'm probably been unfair to Satmap and other companies.  I just find it annoying when there is an article on the forum  by the forum editor presumably based on a press release by Satmap saying maping for the whole of the UK. When the fact remains that there is no commercial solution for Northern Ireland.

For forum members information, I do know Satmap were talking to OSNI last year. It's a pity that the seem to have rushed out maps for Norway, Europe, etc before finishing the UK. Hopefully a solution will be available soon. Meanwhile I will have to make do with my old Nokia E90 and GPS Utilities Software. A practical but less than ideal solution.
