Satmap made a big impression when they launched the Active 10 a couple of years back, and after a couple of firmware and software updates it's become our favourite dedicated GPS. With rave reviews and success in the UK Satmap have turned their attention to Europe and have been working hard behind the scenes to link with map providers and parteners across the continent. The annual trade show at Friedrichshafen was chosen to announce a massive expansion with some ground breaking partnerships leading to maps becoming available across ten European countries.

You can now use your Satmap across most of Europe with the release of new continental mapping

For the first time, Deutschen Alpenvereins (DAV) has signed a partnership with a GPS company to provide its mapping which covers 35 resorts in the German, Austrian and Italian Alpine areas, adding to the existing catalogue of maps for Netherlands, Norway and the UK. Mapping for Austria, France, Germany, and Switzerland is already available, covering counties, regions and larger areas at 1:25k or 1:50k scales.  A further 26 map titles for Belgium, Ireland and Spain will be released shortly, giving customers the choice of over 300 high-quality, topographical maps for use on the Active 10 GPS. This offering is completely unique in the market – no other sports GPS displays such a wide catalogue of European topographical mapping suitable for sports such as mountain biking, hiking, climbing or cross-country skiing and horse riding.

Before rushing out to buy Satmap for access to Austrian maps anyone with a Windows mobile phone might want to check out the Austrian Alpine Club digital map set.

Available for all the main mountain areas in Austria with PC software for around £72, you have to be a member but that in itself gives good rescue insurance.

Most of the maps are 1:25K, so better scale than the DAV maps.

are they 25k maps or 50k maps printed bigger?

The higher mountain groups are 1:25K , the lower areas like the Kitzbuhel & Tuxer alps are 1:50K, so around 40 sheets at 1:25K & 6 at 1:50K.

There are also included maps of the Sella & Brenta Dolomite groups which are at 1:25K.
