Satmap has launched European mapping for its Active 10 GPS unit with initial coverage of Austria, Switzerland and Germany with more to follow.

Satmap Austrian mappingThe mapping is, says Satmap, provided by the top map suppliers in each country and means that Active 10 users can travel abroad and use the nearest equivalent in each country to topographical Ordnance Survey mapping on their GPS.

The topographical maps should be ideal for walking, biking or cross country skiing and it is, claims Satmap MD Richard Calthrop Owen, a unique option:

"Satmap is the first GPS company in the world to offer all these topographical maps to outdoor sports enthusiasts.

"Having quality maps when you’re abroad whether it’s the Alpine areas, or the Black Forest for example, means you can really get the most out of your winter and summer sports.  It also means you won’t have to test your foreign language skills by having to ask for directions.”

Satmap is also preparing mapping for other European countries, which it says will be available before the summer.

The current European mapping partners are:

Austria: BEV (Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen) – Available at 1:50k scale.

Germany: BKG/LVA (Bundesland Karten / Landesvermessungsämter) – maps are available at 1:25k and 1:50k scales.

Switzerland: swisstopo – maps are available at 1:25k and 1:50k scales.

Some 40 European maps are now available on SD card for purchase direct from the Satmap web site at www.satmap.com with prices starting from £34.99. In addition, existing Satmap users can have a world base map upgrade installed for £39.99.

The whole of Norway is available at 1:50000 as well, but Satmap seem to keep very quiet about it.
