The latest version of
Scarpa's iconic Manta four-season mountaineering boot is
now out and as we told you earlier this year, it's an impressive 10 per-cent lighter
than the previous version.
The bulk of the weight loss with the New Manta GSB comes
from a switch to the new GSB Jorrasses sole unit and Pro Fibre mid-sole
giving a weight of 1462 grammes for a size 38. Not only is this lighter
than previous versions, but it also lowers the boot slightly making it
more stable and nimble underfoot, says Scarpa.
The other plus with the new sole unit is compatibility with the GSB
System for crampons and specifically the Grivel Air Tech GSB crampon.
GSB crampons have a prong which locates in slot on the front of the
sole unit avoiding the need for a toe bale and giving a really secure
fit.
The lasting - shape - of the boot has also changed to the DL on men's
versions and DLL on women's. It's the same last as used on the popuar
Mirage boot and claims to be 'exceptionally comfortable and universal
in its fitting ability'. The full grain leather upper and 360-degre
ankle flex carry over from the previous model, but there's now a
substantial rubber rand to add protection from rock and crampon damage.
Oh, and it's still blue, though you can't really tell that from the
image above.
Crampon Offer
Between
now and the end of January 2009, you can save £20 at
participating dealers by buying the New Manta GSB and the Air Tech GSB
campons together by getting the crampons at a reduced price of
£75 - normally they're £95. The boots retail for £189.95

Grivel extension bars up to size 49/50 available from Needlesports, towards the foot of the page. I'm not sure if they hold stock or order them in but their service is always good. Or is the issue that you'd have to buy the longer bar separately rather than have the crampons supplied with it....?
