The heinously expensive Skye Bridge toll has been axed after the Scottish National Executive bought the bridge from the operators making passage to the island free.
It's good news for the people of Skye and walkers and climbers who want to take advantage of its astonishing mountain landscape with the announcement that the reviled Skye Bridge tolls have been axed.
The bridge has been bought from its operators by the Scottish National Executive at a cost of £27 million and the tolls have been abolished as of now.
The bridge tolls have been a cause celebre for locals since it opened in 1995 with the bridge operators being accused of profiteering - the five-minute crossing cost a punitive £11.40 return per car - and campaigners conducting a programme of non-payment to register their opposition.
The Skye Bridge Anti-Toll web site is jubilant this morning describing the dark toll booths and carrying photos of the toll-free bridge as well as the press announcement made this morning.
