TVWalks has just released a Video Guide to the South Downs Way, which runs from the chalk cliffs of Eastbourne to the city of Winchester. It may be further south than some OMers care to tread - bar the Southern Alps of course - but there's actually a fair bit of scenic coastline on the trail, not to mention a nice rolling hill or three, to tempt the boots of southern - or south-bound - walkers.
The guide is presented by Anthony Burton, author of several National Trail books, and it details the history, geography and archaeology of the 100 mile trail, as well as the route itself.
According to Andy Gattiker, South Downs Way National Trail Officer: "It will certainly get you in the mood if you're planning a trip and bring back great memories of the diverse wildlife, spectacular landscapes and rich heritage experienced along the way if you've already returned from the Downs."
Sounds interesting for long-distance walkers with a week to spare ...
The guide costs £12 + postage and packing and you can buy it direct from the website, www.tvwalks.com. It's also available over the counter from National Trust shops, retailing at £14.99.
Finally, you can download National Trail guides to iPod or MP4 players directly from the website, including guides to the Hadrian’s Wall Path, The Cotswold Way and The Ridgeway.
