One of the UK's major outdoor brands has been plying the press with unsolicitited bottles of fine wines, we find out what's going on.
We were shocked and appalled when a small box turned up in the post
containing a bottle of wine and a press release from Sprayway.

Nano-care means this Explorer
shirt is ideal
for wine wavers, tea tippers and careless
coffee quaffers

Leaving aside the fact that we're obviously beyond petty bribery, and
anyway it wasn't a very big bottle of wine, it's clearly pretty poor
to be encouraging people to consume alcohol.
Then we read the accompanying blurb. Turns out that the small
square of material we took to be Action Man's handkerchief is
actually a sample of a new fabric which Sprayway uses in their
Spring/Summer '04 Lifewear clothing.
Called MCS, it's treated with Nano-care technology, a treatment
which Sprayway say means that liquids just roll off the surface of
the fabric meaning it's ideal for spilling non-oily liquids like
coffee, tea and red wine.
We drank most of the red wine and tipped the dregs over the fabric
sample, sure enough, it just ran off. Next we rubbed the wine into
the material only to find it rinsed out instantly leaving no stain or
residue. The same thing happened with tea and coffee, so we drank
those as well. Impressive stuff.
This sort of water repellancy is nothing particularly new, the big
plus with Nanocare, says Sprayway, is that it will last 'for the life
of the garment' and won't wash away after a short period.
All of which makes it ideal for clumsy people who can't help
spilling non-oily liquids on their clothes. The men's range includes
Explorer long- and short-sleeved check shirts, combi pants, cargo
pants, pants and shorts, while women get Essential Combi Pants and
Essential Pants. Prices range from £35 to £50 and you could
save that in washing powder.
Maybe.
If you were very clumsy. In the shops about now.
