Just in case the lightweight revolution has passed you by, here's
a bit of a wake-up call from The North Face in the form of a
new waterproof jacket, which is claimed to be the probably the
lightest waterproof shell in the world.
The
new DIAD Jacket - apparently it stands for 'Done In A Day',
nowt to do with durability we hope - weighs a ridiculously light
claimed 199 grammes and, we quote, 'bursts with new
technology'.
It's made from TNF's own HyVent DT waterproof and breathable
fabric and uses Magic Seam Technology. That means that rather than
being stitched, the fabric is hot cut and the seams are welded edge
to edge using 'state-of-the-art rotary sonic and line bonding
machinery'.
So now you know. The important bit is that the edge-on joins save
material and weight and allow the company to use super narrow 10mm
sealing tape resulting in softer, lighter, less bulky seams which are
still waterproof.
We wouldn't expect too much in the way of hard core durability
from the DIAD, but if what you need is a very light waterproof
jacket, take a look.
