Losing weight is all the rage with The North Face launching what they claim is probably the world's lightest fully waterproof shell jacket awash with funky new technology.

Just in case the lightweight revolution has passed you by, here's a bit of a wake-up call from The North Face in the form of a new waterproof jacket, which is claimed to be the probably the lightest waterproof shell in the world.

The new DIAD Jacket - apparently it stands for 'Done In A Day', nowt to do with durability we hope - weighs a ridiculously light claimed 199 grammes and, we quote, 'bursts with new technology'.

It's made from TNF's own HyVent DT waterproof and breathable fabric and uses Magic Seam Technology. That means that rather than being stitched, the fabric is hot cut and the seams are welded edge to edge using 'state-of-the-art rotary sonic and line bonding machinery'.

So now you know. The important bit is that the edge-on joins save material and weight and allow the company to use super narrow 10mm sealing tape resulting in softer, lighter, less bulky seams which are still waterproof.

Ten Per-Cent Less Weight...

The weight saving, says TNF, is in the order of ten per-cent of
the total weight of the garment were it to have been made the
traditional way with conventional stitching and taping.

On top of the high tech construction, you also get die-cut cuffs,
mini-pit vents and a fully-adjustable hood, which is nice.

Keith Byrne, Marketing Manager for The North Face and keen
adventure racer says: "For me, the DIAD jacket is the perfect shell
- it packs away to nothing and is so light to carry you almost
forget it is there. Yet when you need it, the DIAD has all the
features and performance you need in a technical jacket".

But then you know what adventure racers are like... The DIAD will
be in the shops shortly and should cost around £120. That
makes it significantly cheaper than its nearest obvious competitor,
Patagonia

We wouldn't expect too much in the way of hard core durability from the DIAD, but if what you need is a very light waterproof jacket, take a look.
