Vango Goes Ultralightweight For 2007

Vango's new Ultralite 100 one-person tent looks like bringing ultra-lightweight camping to the masses at an affordable price, we reckon it's going to go down a storm when it appears next year.

We're just back from yet another outdoors trade show - is there no end to them? - this time down near Coventry and the thing that made the deepest impression on us was a new ultra-lightweight tent from Scottish brand Vango.

The Ultralite 100 pictured isn't due out until early 2007, but we reckon it looks like an ideal lightweight starter tent for those who've been havering on the brink of going ultralight, but have been put off by the expense.

It's a single-skin, one-person tent that weighs in at a claimed 900 grammes and will cost £130. It looks pretty carefully thought through as well with a neat tent-top venting system topped by its own short cross pole obviously aimed at keeping condensation down.

There's a central transverse hoop - reinforced with a lightweight version of Vango's tension band system - supplemented by two short vertical end poles to keep internal space as useable as possible. Keeping the weight down on a relative budget means that there's no porch, which may put off some potential buyers, but if you look at it as a more useable alternative to either a bivvy bag or a tarp, you'll be close the mark.

It looks nice too, the tent at the show was a neat limey green shade which coordinates with Vango's matching Ultralite packs and sleeping bags.

Like we said, not out until early 2007, but our gut feeling is that Vango is on to a winner here. And, well, it actually looks sweet, if you see what we're saying. There's also going to be a two-person version weighing around 1300 grammes, more about that soon.

Surely the advantage of a tent over a bivi is having a porch so there is somewhere to cook if the weather turns bad, and to store muddy kit.

Unless, of course, you have a bivi with a porch! :-)))

thought bivvis were all porch and no tent.

I would never use a single skin due to experts opinions on condensation when used in our wet climate, and yes, whats the point in buying one of those when you can get a Laserlite with double skin and a porch.

Big Vango fan, but not liking the look of those gastly new things!

Plus its a complete rip off of that horrible Solo North Face Tent.

you mean the north face solo crisp packet
(rustle,rustle!)

not sure where the crisp packet analogy comes from? I bought one and as long as you pitch it drum tight might doesn't make any noise> ? Also own an Akto for winter 1 man adventures but find I like the TNF for other 3 season 1 night jaunts.

I'd rather use the Akto year round meself!

I have a single-skin, one-person MHW tent without porch that I sometimes use in preference to a bivvy bag in summer. In some conditions you can get condensation issues, but often it's fine - venting carefully makes a big difference. The lack of a porch isn't great in blowy, wet situations, but then cooking from a bivvy bag isn't great either.

As far as the comparison with a Laserlite goes, yes, the Laserlite is better specced, but it's also more expensive. I think the Vango tent is aimed more at entry-level lightpackers.

Thats a good point John, not everyone can afford an Akto or Laserlite I suppose so atleast Vango are filling a gap in the market.
