Vaude Gets PrimaLofted

Two new jackets using the excellent PrimaLoft synthetic insulation from German outfit Vaude, just the thing for a cold, damp British winter we reckon.

We're big fabs of PrimaLoft synthetic insulation here on OUTDOORSmagic. It's warm and quick-drying, but best of all in UK conditions, it's also water repellent, which makes it ideal for throwing over other layers for a hill-top lunch stop - ooh look, alliteration...

We've been using Rab's excellent new Belay Jacket - full test soon - but also new on the Primaloft front are two neat tops from German gear meisters VauDe.

First off the blocks is the new Timbu Pro. It's a hooded jacket with abrasion- resistant shoulder and sleeve reinforcements, plus you can un-zip the hood if you want to. The tougher panels should make it an option for active use in seriously cold conditions.

It also features water repellent inserts at the shoulders, front and back areas, it says here, which in combination with the PrimaLoft filling should work well. Weight is 536 grammes and price is £120. Also available in a less gaudy anthracite/black colour scheme.

Less conventional is the Timbu Zip Off like the Pro it uses a PrimaLoft fill, but has zip-off sleeves and, at 494 grammes, weighs slightly less. Should be good for general outdoor use plus you'll be able to wear it as an insulated gilet if that's your thing or you feel a desperate need to show off your arms. Price for the Zip Off is £110.
