The innovative and rather useful ViewRanger software is up
for a prize in a major international competition for developers, it
says here.
Augementra, the company behind the software, are the only UK
finalists in the competition which is organised by Nokia and Adobe to
find the best applications developed for Nokia's very bright phones,
with the results due to be announced at the Smartphone Show in London
next month.
OS Maps On The Phone
ViewRanger - in case you're unaware of the application -
transforms a Nokia smartphone into a fully featured trail and
off-road navigation system and makes Ordnance Survey Landranger
(1:50,000 scale) and Explorer (1:25,000 scale) maps available on
Nokia phones for the first time.
That means you have access to all the information given on OS maps
including hill contours, tourist information, camping and caravan
sites, picnic areas and viewpoints, and Rights of Way information for
England and Wales on your phone.
Panorama Drama...
The software also incorporates Augmentra's Panoramic Viewpoint
technology. This unique immersive map places the user in the centre
of a panoramic 3D display where all the main landscape features are
labelled. Hills are named, woodland and lakes identified, and
villages, towns and prominent landmarks are shown. With Panoramic
Viewpoint a user can quickly and easily identify all kinds of
features in the landscape so no more confusing Scafell with Great
Gable...

I've just taken the plunge with this piece of software and the demo looks impressive. Invested in a bluetooth GPS, looking like the Nokia offering ATM, as it's the only one with replacable battery. And RE: battery life, i've got 4 batteries for my Nokia, so i should be OK.

I've gone for the Nat Parks one, as it's great value. I might extend my coverage later using that feature. I also looked at 1:25k, but it's prohibitively expensive. Have to say, i took one look at that 1:50k map on my mobile screen and my credit card and i were helpless :-)))
