Good news for AW fans - Wainwright's legendary guides to the
Lakeland fells have been saved as a new publisher takes over the
production of the books.
Just a few weeks ago it looked like the end for the pipe-toting
fell addict's extraordinary volumes as they were dropped by the previous publisher
Michael Joseph in a move that made ripples in the national media.
Now though, London firm Frances
Lincoln has stepped into the breach and taken over the guides
after - according to the Wainwright Society - fierce competition for
the rights among 30-odd potential publishers.
Althought the new publishers are based in grimy Kentish Town, the
books will actually be printed in Wainwright's home town of Kendal
according to the author's original wishes. The first to be printed
will be the seven Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells compiled by
A. Wainwright between 1952 and 1966. Even better, the books, which
are currently out of print, will sell at a reduced price of
£11.99. Publication date is Thursday 17th April 2003.
Further Wainwright books will follow later in the year. For full
details along with more information about specific volumes and the
man himself, see this
story on the Wainwright Society's web site.
