Normally our man Gear, Richard Gear, is a Tuesday regular on OUTDOORSmagic, but for one week only, our Richard has been answering your gear queries on a Wednesday.

Remember, Richard can't answer every question, but he does his best and you can find almost 500 of his previous answers archived in the Ask Richard Gear section of the site.

Q: Which lightweight breathable waterproof women's jacket would you recomend?

A: 'I'm not a woman myself, but I have spoken to some.... One general point is that fit is user specific, so you need to try a few different jackets and choose the one that works best for you.

'Women tend to be shorter in the upper body than men and have narrower shoulders and more pronounced waists, so a women's-specific jacket is a very good move.'

Q: Which boots for an early season Via Ferrata trip to the Dolomites?

A: 'In dry conditons, most Via Ferrata can be tackled in any half-decent outdoor footwear, but if you may need to wear crampons, I'd suggest a typical three-season boot with a B1 crampon grade combined with a flexible walking crampon. Bear in mind that you shouldn't need to use them extensively, just for security in short sections.'

Q: Which clean UK fuels for my Primus Multifuel stove?

A: 'The name is Gear, Richard 'Terribly British' Gear. You'll have to forgive me for my ignorance of Canadian, but I'll do my best to explain the most commonly available liquid fuels in the UK.

'The three fuels which you're most likely to find are paraffin (kerosene), petrol (gasoline to you I suspect) and white gas or Coleman fuel which is, I think, effectively naptha.'
