What the Buttons Do
How to operate GPS devices using common command features
|
Whilst different makes and models of GPS receivers may differ in the number and position of the buttons used to operate the device, there are certain buttons and features that are common to most receivers.
-
POWER/ON – The first and most essential button. This is normally positioned on the right hand edge of the device and may have multiple functions once the device is powered up. Many Garmin receivers use the Power button to adjust the backlight, time and date settings
-
PAGE – This is commonly the most used button on a GPS receiver, giving access to both main and sub-menus. Typically the PAGE button works in a cycle through the functions, returning to your start page
-
ENTER – This is primarily a confirmation button that you wish to use the feature selected via the PAGE and/or MENU button
-
MENU – More common on Magellan than Garmin devices, this is used to select the specific feature or setting you wish to use/alter
-
ZOOM – Commonly using two separate buttons, this feature allows you to zoom in or out on a map
Some of the more recent devices also integrate a Thumb Stick control for cycling through menus and selecting options. Other buttons relate to specific navigational tasks, including adding or deleting Waypoints and Routes/Tracks and navigating to set points.
FIND and GOTO are covered in the section on using Waypoints and Routes.
