"Farting is as much a part of the outdoors as waxing your boots," claims nutritional expert Dr Chris Fenn ( www.chrisfenn.com) in the November issue of TGO. Apparently, the average person has around one kilo of bacteria feeding on undigested food residues in the colon, producing a litre of gas every day.
However, the delicate balance of nice and naughty bacteria in your gut can be upset by anything from emotional stress to tiredness and fatigue, claims the outrageous story, which is why a hard day in the hills can cause trouser-ripping flatulence in some - or should we say, other - people. Not us. Ever.
To avoid this problem, Chris recommends that the afflicted look to their diet, chew their food well, and avoid sulphur-rich foods such as sausages, bacon, wine, beer and dried apricots. If all else fails, try one of the many probiotic yogurt drinks on the market, which can redress the body's balance in favour of good bacteria.
Ooh, is (sniff, sniff), is that you..?
