Impotence drug Viagra has been implicated as the cause of a lot of
dreadful jokes about 'getting up it' and 'getting it up' - you won't
however find that sort of smut on OUTDOORSmagic, oh no.
The cause of the dreadful wordplay is an announcement by
scientists that the drug could be a major boost in the battle against
altitude sickness. Apparently the drug combats droop by enhibiting an
enzyme, called phosphodiesterase - try saying that at 8000 metres -
which constricts blood vessels in the penis.
Now it seems that the same enzyme is also implicated in altitude
sickness where it constricts the lungs causing breathing
difficulties. Logically that would mean it could improve oxygen
uptake at altitude, but wouldn't have any effect on blood composition
changes?
Anyway, before you rush out and buy some Viagra for your next
mountain trip, bear in mind that there have been no clinical trials
at altitude. If any more information comes our way, we'll be getting
it up on the site as quickly as possible...
