Martin Moran and Twid Turner to lead winter safety lectures

Crikey, it’s been chilly this week, must be nearly time for the BMC Winter Lectures. The series has a new name for 2005 – the BMC Winter Essentials – but it’s the same chance to spend a couple of hours learning about mountain safety, all for the price of a cheap round.

The speakers this year are Martin Moran and Twid Turner, both UIAGM-qualified mountain guides. Martin runs his guiding business out of the north-west of Scotland and has written a shelf-load of mountaineering books. Twid was head of rock-climbing at the Plas-y-Brenin National Mountain Centre in Snowdonia before setting up his own guiding business.

Each two-hour lecture is aimed at making walkers and climbers aware of the skills you’ll need in a winter environment. Topics include equipment and clothing; navigation; trip planning; avalanche awareness, belays and more. The organisers also promise ‘amusing tales’, presumably so you can pick out the useful lessons from any number of desperate situations without actually getting into one yourself.

You can catch the lectures throughout November in Leicester, London, Bristol, Bangor, Penrith and Leeds. Full dates and locations here.

Tickets cost £4 per person for BMC members and £6 for non-members –

Tickets are on sale now; contact the BMC on 0870 010 4878 or email office@thebmc.co.uk
