The Health and Safety Executive has issued three new guidance
sheets for those involved in water and rock and ropes activites.
The sheets are aimed at providers of activities and, say the HSE,
give 'simple, practical advice for the providers of activities on
steps that can be taken to detect hazards and assess risks.'
The water and rock sheet is particularly pertinent in the light of
recent well-publicised fatal accidents involving gorge walking and
canyoning. It outlines the various risks involved and suugests a risk
assessment framework as the basis of operating safely. It's not
exactly rocket science, but you can't help thinking that if this
advice had been followed carefully in some case, lives could have
been saved.
