This week's Monday Kit Tip is a topical one again in the form of a quick and easy way of carrying your ice axe on the hill so it's tucked away but easily accessible.

stowing an ice axe

Ice axe loops on packs are all very well, but they don't exactly leave your axes instantly accessible. The classic solution is simply to push your axe down between your pck shoulder strap and your back so the pick is hooked over the strap and the axes is securely held.

That way, if you're scrambling on mixed ground, for example, you can simply stuff your axe out of the way if you need to use your hands, or pull it out instantly by the head should you need to make a move on snow.

The only thing to be wary of, is forgetting it's there if you're going to remove your pack on steep ground. Sounds odd, but works brilliantly.

As someone who nearly lost an eye just before Christmas to someone else walking past with a badly packed axe, I'd say this was a very good idea.

It is kind of a bonus that it stops the rear of your pack from being a lethal weapon...

To solve the potential loss issue, I make sure it also goes into the carry handle. Really difficult to lose the axe then :o)
