If it's Monday, it must be time for the Monday Kit Tip -
this week, lazy camping cooking at a reasonable price courtesy of
pre-cooked meals.
As the military has known for
ages, pre-cooked food in foil pouches has some big pluses - first it
tastes great compared to most lightweight dried meals, next it requires
zero cullinary input - just heat it in a pan of boiling water - and
finally you can save on the washing up by eating it direct from the
pouch.
One solution along these lines is the outdoors-specific Wayfayer
range of meals - save weight by removing the outer plastic wrapper and
carry just the pouch - but there are plenty of other options
out there, most notably the Look What We Found
range, which is cheaper than specialist outdoor meals and
very tasty. Unfortunately when cooked in the pouch, the print comes off
in the water rendering it unusable for drinks, which would be a our
normal strategy.
Plus there's an increasing number of micro-wavable pouched meals out
there, everything up to and including Thai curries actually made in
Thailand - yum - and our experience is that anything micro-wave
friendly is also boilable in the in the pouch.
Top it all up with some easy cook, boil in the bag rice and you have
simple and tasty camp food that's slightly weightier than dried
options, but tastes great.
