The first in a new series of Monday Morning Kit Tips
to help you make the most of your gear and the outdoors generally.
More Than Just A Pit-Zip
Pit-zips started off as a venting option for climbers who
are encumbered by gear and can't use core vents and main zips easily,
but have increasingly spread into general mountain wear. What most
people don't
realise, is that you can get a much great cooling effect by actually
putting your entire arm through the pit zip and effectively converting
the jacket into a gilet.
It's not always possible, but with a bit of tinkering, you can usually
manage it. And because your arms lose heat really effectively, it's a
far more effective way of cooling down than just using pit-zips alone.
And when you need to warm up again, just pop the sleeves back on. No
need to remove jacket or pack.
If you've got a killer tip of your own, just drop us a line
and we'll share it with other OUTDOORSmagic readers.
Discuss this story
exactly as Furtech suggest! . well worth thinking about, though some jackets have them in strange places or too short.
