How to keep your water bottle flowing freely when the going gets cold.

Monday, so
it must be time for our regular
Monday kit tip. This week, how to carry water in winter
without it freezing solid on you.
We'll cover hydration systems another time, but if you're using a water
bottle, here are a couple of tips to keep the H20 flowing. First, get a
head start on the cold by filling your water bottle with hot water to
start with and then wrapping it in something with insulating properties
- a spare fleece or hat for example. Or better still, if you can, store it in an inside pocket, close to your body.
Not like this - ice forms at top
- but like this...
Our second tip is to carry your water bottle upside down. That won't
stop the contents freezing in properly cold conditions, but in marginal
temperatures, inverting your bottle means that the ice will form at the
bottom of the bottle - the highest point - rather than in the neck,
where it will simply block access to the rest of your water.
Wide-mouthed bottles block less easily generally.
If you've got a
killer tip of your own, just drop us a line
and we'll share it with other OUTDOORSmagic readers.
