We'd like to give you a race tee-shirt and a pair of gloves. We'd like to, but we're not going to. In fact, if you win, we're going to give you a cheque for £3000...

Not part of the race, you hope...

That's the message from the Red Bull Northern Exposure, which has the biggest ever cash prize purse ever offered for a UK adventure race. In addition to the top prize, the runners-up will pocket £1500 and the third-place finishers £500.

Plus there's a pool of Berghaus gear to be won as well. For full details, check out the Red Bull Northern Exposure web site.

Latest news on the winter conditions race in the Gorms ((April 12-17th, Glenmore Lodge) is that top contenders, the Davies siblings' Team Parrot-Lythgoe, who placed 7th in the AR Discovery World Championships last year, are entered and up for it. Meanwhile, organiser Steve Watkins reckons: 'There are quite a few dark horses in the pack too, with Scottish-based mountaineering and fell running teams hoping to cash in on their local knowledge and an intriguing group of upcoming AR teams who could cause an upset.'

Closing date for entries is a month from now on March 14, but there are only 40 places, so if you want to take part, get stuck in now.

Stop Press

Glenmore Lodge is running pre-race skills courses specially designed to prepare competitors for the event. One is an afternoon refresher course scheduled for the afternoon of 13 April and assumes that you already have some winter skills that need brushing up.

The other is a weekend course on 22-24 March designed to introduce competitors to the winter skills they'll need to take part in the race.

There are full details on the race site - see the skills section - and you need to book via the booking office at Glenmore Lodge. For their contact details see their own web site.

Adsventure racing is, as ever, inconceivably hard. However, if you must do it, better get some training eh? Especially as you won't be allowed to take part unless you pass the basic skills assessment before the race...
