Grauniad regulars might have noticed ex-Teardrop Explodes frontman
Julian Cope gracing the cover of the Society section.
Inside there's an interview with Cope, who's not just a post-punk
musician of consumate weirdness and brilliance, but also a serious
researcher into ancient stone circles and landscapes.
He believes that our connection with the landscape is a deep one
and that our monuments are an attempt to give meaning to place. He
also argues that while we need to protect ancient monuments of
significance, that we're too precious about conservation of some,
places, trying to preserve old things purely because they're old.
"Perhaps we should set windfarms up in lines or in circles,' he
suggests. "Let's be monumental about them".
He also believes that "the Peak District National Park is now a
vast sanctuary for the hundreds of thousands of people who live near
it, just as in the past the megalith builders turned the whole area
into a huge limestone sanctuary relflecting the monumental
landscape."
We're guessing that Cope would be pro-bolting then...
